Bandeirantes, a dungeons school
September 10, 2008Living in the dungeons in a school environment? Bandeirantes is it. Colégio Bandeirantes, one of the most tradicional schools of São Paulo is about to establish a new tradition: have the largest percentage of students developing diseases such as depression that, in a bit less than half percent of the cases, make people end up commiting suicide. A study made in 2006 envolving all the private schools of the country reveals that 81% of high school students at Bandeirantes started to show agressive behavior very often so as many of them, unhappy with life in general, began to hurt themselves in order to make their inner pain disappear for a moment. In addiction, it was not a coincidence that many of those who started to have bad reactions due to Bandeirantes were the ones forced to study there. Therefore, parents who obligate their children to study in Bandeirantes are only taking the risk of making their children develop mental, social and physical diseases that could affect their life.
One of the disadvantages of studying forced at Bandeirantes is the possibility of developing mental diseases due to the pressure people are exposed to in there. When spending at least 6 hours per day in a dungeons environment at a school where the pressure to get acceptable grades is the biggest ever seen, many students begin to feel frustrated with themselves. They get tormented with the assumption of failing; their self-esteem gets extremely reduced as they stop believing in their capacity as a whole. For instance, Giovanna Costa flunked her first year studying at Bandeirantes. Even though she did not want to leave her old school she went to Bandeirantes with an inner promise that she would give her best in studies. She strove to study the entire first semester. All the effort she was making seemed not to be enough for her to pass, though. She lost her confidence in herself, giving up in the middle of the path. All her motivation was gone along with her willing to live. She cried a lot in the final semester; she cursed herself craving for a strong medicine that could kill her when consumed in high doses. Depression it was. She is still in treatment nowadays going to a psychiatrist twice a week in an attempt to put an end in her trauma. Therefore, if she hadn’t been obligated to study at Bandeirantes she would have had truly motivation to study in a place where she was happy and would have ever let herself fall down that much.

Marina,
You are on the right track. This paragraph is quite solid as far as the American rhetoric goes. Please, do ahead and continue writing your piece.

First, one of the disadvantages of studying at Bandeirantes out of coercion is the possibility of developing mental diseases due to the pressure people are exposed to there. When spending at least 6 hours per day in a dungeon-like environment at a school where the pressure to get acceptable grades is the biggest ever seen, many students begin to feel frustrated with themselves. Second, once it’s a dungeons environment, people often get social diseases when studying at Bandeirantes. Considering that people at Bandeirantes are exposed to much pressure due to grade competition students make between themselves, it’s very hard for a person who studies there to have a social life. Bandeirantes student’s routine basically consists at going to school in the morning and then, when at home, spending the rest of their day-time studying so as they’ll be more prepared for the tests. With a schedule like that in their minds, it’s very hard for them to hang out without feeling guilty for not being at home studying. As a result, Bandeirantes students do not feel comfortable when interacting with other people. For example, Fernanda Lima studies in one of the best classes at Bandeirantes, classified as 2A1. She never felt excited about moving to Bandeirantes, yet she’s trying really bad to be successful in there. Specially due to the fact that she’s in one of the most competitive classes of the school she feels a flat-out pressure even from herself. She’s no longer going out with her friends, she’s missed all the parties she was invited from the beginning of the year until now as she doesn’t want to waste study time doing what she calls “unnecessary things.” Last week, while she was at the school’s library studying chemestry the most handsome guy of Bandeirantes invited her to go to the movies with him. Fernanda was so used to not having anyone to talk with that she didn’t know how to react to the invitation, as the boy interpretated as a negative answer leaving her alone again. She got really upset with the whole episode feeling rejected. Even though she is the one who does not interact with people and that she has a lot of friends who really like her, she feels sad all the time, believing that no one cares for her. Thus, asking so much from themselves, Bandeirantes students eventually get some sort of social diseases that is linked with the kind of environment people are exposed to when studying there.
Third, one of the consequences of studying at Bandeirantes, specially when forced to, people take the risk of getting physical diseases that may leave scars permanently.

Marina,
As I have already mentioned in class, I need to give people a temporary grade. Here it is.

Thus, demanding so much from themselves, Bandeirantes students eventually get some sort of social diseases linked with the kind of environment people are exposed to when studying there.
Third, one of the consequences of studying at Bandeirantes, specially when out of coercion, is that people take the risk of getting physical diseases that may leave scars permanently. As mentioned before, an impressive outcome related to stress people suffer when studying at Bandeirantes is the possibility of develop depression. In an advanced level of the disease, some effects of depression can be seen as an attemp of the person to get rid of impotence feeling. The most commun “escape” used by people is to cut themselves. They believe that by ripping their skin they will focus their minds in the physical pain forgetting the inner one at least for a couple of minutes. They all know that behaviors like that won’t help them have their self-esteem back and neither their will to face the challenge of studying in Bandeirantes. Yet, they keep hurting themselves frequently. The consequences of this act go beyond the probability of remaining with permanent scars all over their bodys. Despite of the fact that these brief moments of “relief” will gener endless moments of shame of the marks that it leaves, there’s also a much bigger concernment involved in the whole issue: depending on the exactly place where the person is cutting himself/herself and the intensity of the cut the person can break a certain part of the pulse and die instantly. For example, Lucas Figueiredo is in his first year as a Bandeirantes student. His parents decided to change his school when they realized that Lucas’ potential goes way beyond his friends potential. He wanted to do Design in college as there was no really need for him to go to such a demanding school. Once at Bandeirantes, Lucas decided to do his best, though, so as not to let his parents disappointed. However, his provision to study really hard to have a frustrating outcome in tests was not lasting. In his third month at Bandeirantes he was already feeling as he wouldn’t be able to go any longer nor better. His stress level was so high that his agressive side was being shown very often along with his willing to be away from everybody else so he could cry as much as he wanted to. Lucas didn’t even want to visit an analyst as he said he had already self-diagnosed himself with depression. The necessity of cutting himself so as to make the inner pain leave for an instant was prominent inside Lucas. He soon began to do it and hide the cut with a sweater. One day he was feeling so impotent that he just wanted to cut as deeper as he was brave enough to. As his two arms were full of open-scars he decided to cut a spot near his pulse. He was playing with fire, yet he did not know the dangerous he was letting himself in. When he found out the danger he was already in hospital with a bit less than a dozen doctors taking care of him. He almost died, yet he learn the lesson and have never cut himself again after this episode. Therefore, parents should think twice before putting their children forced at Bandeirantes and students should not think of self-hurting as a way to postpone pain when under pressure at Bandeirantes once it’s only health-risking as there’s the possibility of getting physic diseases.
Bandeirantes, one of the most tradicional and known schools of São Paulo, cannot interfere in its students life so much that they may end up develop diseases of all sorts such as mental, physical and social ones that will remain with them for the rest of their lifes. Also, parents should not make their children study at Bandeirantes out of coercion once it only contributes to these outcomes to get worse. The number of people who, victims of Bandeirantes pressure and stress environment, let the school interfere in their lifes in a unhealthy way is a manner of study by educational institutions all over the country. Depression has being developed by a large porcentage of Bandeirantes students with its first signs visualized in the very first months studying there as its consequences can urge at any time and lead people even to suicide in the worse cases. Clearly, Bandeirantes environment is not alike any expectations for a school environment, once it’s only full of hard pressure, high stress and hopeless competitions between students grades.
