Donation is a way to perpetuate poverty . Giving money to poor people as the only way to help them instead of giving good fundamental education or job opportunities is not the right path to face and solve the situation, creating a poverty-stricken group of people. The Brazilian government social program named Fome Zero consists of a monthly voucher of R$ 200,00 given to poor people, mainly in boondocks, in order to give them at least the minimum living conditions, like eating in a daily basis, buying some clothes, having personal hygien. Unfortunately, Fome Zero has been working as a palliative solution for people not to try to find work, it has been making people comfortable with the receiving money situation, and it has been encouraging these people to sign up their siblings permanently in the program.
The first major problem with the Fome Zero program is that poor people enlisted in it do not look for a job with the intention of becoming self sufficient in life. Many of these people are trying to put themselves in a comfortable situation by just receiving the money and not making a real effort to improve their life quality, assuming Fome Zero will last forever. João da Silva, 35, recently unemployed who lives is Itapipoca, Ceara, one of the poorest states in Brazil, decided to quit his menial job one month after having received his first Fome Zero voucher. ” There is no reason for me to work for working 8 hours a day on a daily basis if I can stay home with my family for the same period of time earning an equivalent amount” , João said. Although giving money is a way to help these people, it does not solve the poverty problem.
The second problem of Fome Zero program is that staying at home goofing off instead of trying to improve the work capacity, taking courses in order to improve job abilities is not a smart decision to make, because people can not handle the money dependence situation. At the moment the donation ends, the poverty will increase again. This situation happens a lot in cities involved in Fome Zero. It’s commom to walk around the streets and see people playing cards, chatting with friends and doing nothing, as they have settled in their own lifestyles due to the confortable situation of receive money to stay at home. To a person without a good level of education, which is the bulk of people in the Fome Zero program according to IBGE, it is difficult to understand why it is wrong stay at home receiving donation. Having a decent job depending on himself, is much better than depending on government mood. Governments can change, programs can be finished, but a good worker will last decades. They are unable to grasp the concept that if government changes or simply call off the program, they will face a lot of problems, probably more than they had faced before joining the program. For instance, Marcos Abreu, 45, former farm worker, is so satisfied with the program that he quit his job, deciding to just receive Fome Zero donation. “ I was tired of my job. I had a terrible boss and a very low wage . I preferred to quit and spend my free time with friends. Fome Zero is my retirement program”, Marcos laughs. Unfortunately, situations like these happen, and people like Marcos will regret when the program ends, finishing his retirement program. Not trying to improve work abilities can sounds good at the beginning, but at the end it will only increase the gap between poor people and the ones that live above the line of poverty.
Finally, Fome Zero fosters generations to become permanently dependent on this governmental program. Assuming that Fome Zero will last forever, siblings will follow their relatives’ paths by staying at home with their family. This attitude will only amplify the social disparity problem by making people stay in the program and not to make an effort to develop his job skills and then making they live the same lifestyle they have always lived. These extra people on this program will be the second generation and will face a new kind of challenge by already being born in the program they will think that Fome Zero is the only way they can live and will totally settle. Washington da Silva, 16, is João’s oldest son and he talks about not wanting to work because he already has a house to live and he will be able to keep on living under with Fome Zero program. If these new people that are entering the program do not have the parents’ guidance working as a good model, they will continue making the same mistake and will permanently stay in Fome Zero.
Ok, guys. Here is what I think. As far as structure goes, your introduction is flawless. Very solid indeed. And so is your first argument. Now, you guys will have to develop a second paragraph that is as good as the first one. Also, you will need to revise this third paragraph as far as your content goes, avoiding all the overlapping of ideas with the first one. Also, you will need to work on a concluding paragraph. This is all due until 8:00 p.m. this coming Sunday.
PS: In class tonight, we will start a new rhetorical strategy called Comparison and Contrast. An option you guys have is to abandon the Fome Zero and work on this one together again. It is your call (= decision).
